Summary
DescriptionFlag of the President of the United States (1945–1959).svg | Flag of the President of the United States used from October 25, 1945 to July 4, 1959, which had 48 stars in the circle. It was defined in Executive Order 9646. This flag replaced the 1916 presidential flag, which was similar but had four stars. President Roosevelt initiated the redesign process, under the mistaken assumption that the four stars were indicative of rank, and the process continued under Truman. The four stars were replaced by a ring of 48 stars (the number of U.S. states at the time), the eagle was changed to be full color instead of white per heraldic custom, and the eagle's head was changed to face to its right instead of its left as the prior flag (and seals) did, also per heraldic custom (facing right is more "honorable"). This flag was modified in 1959 and 1960 to add 49th and 50th stars, but is otherwise unchanged. |
