Summary
DescriptionI Wish I Was In Dixie's Land, 1860.jpg | I Wish I Was In Dixie's Land, 1860. Note: I Wish I Was In Dixie's Land, better known as Dixie, was written by Daniel Decatur Emmett in 1859 as a closing song for the Bryant Minstrels' performance in New York City. The term "I wish I was in Dixie" was used among circus performers to express their desire to be in the south during the winter. The song immediately became popular across the country and was claimed by both Northern and Southern troops during the Civil War. Dixie's lyrics caused many to accuse Emmett of southern sympathies, despite his family's long history of opposing slavery. | |||
