Pais was said to be obsessed with the Columbine high school massacre, and perpetrators Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold. After Pais was reported missing, police discovered her obsession with the massacre. With the 20th anniversary of the massacre about a week away, and Pais purchasing a shotgun in Colorado, police came to believe she was planning a second massacre around April 20. On April 15, she committed suicide by a self-inflicted gunshot wound, before the manhunt began. Her body was found on April 17.
