Use | Prior to the Union of the Crowns, 1603 |
Prior to the 1707 Acts of Union the blazon of the arms had changed markedly following the Union of the Crowns in 1603, when James VI, King of Scots, acceded to the thrones of both the Kingdom of England and Kingdom of Ireland, following the death of Elizabeth I of England. The resulting personal union between each kingdom was to be reflected in the blazon of the arms post 1603.
Since 1603 the arms of Scottish and, since 1707, British monarchs have retained a blazon specifically for use in Scotland, whereby the Scottish elements of the arms take precedence over those of England. This distinction can be seen in the current Royal Coat of Arms of the United Kingdom as used in Scotland.
