FINK[1] is a community alert broker designed to process and enrich large time-domain astronomy alert streams, such as the one from the upcoming Vera C. Rubin observatory (previously referred to as the Large Synoptic Survey Telescope, LSST). It was created as an answer to the call for alert brokers by the Vera C Rubin LSST team[2]. Among other objectives, this observatory will enable the discovery of an unprecedented large number of astronomical transient sources, hence it will create several millions of alerts per night[3]. This will include many types of transients including novae, supernovae, gamma-ray bursts optical afterglows, Tidal Disruption Events, quasar variability, gravitational lensing. Promising candidates of these objects must be identified to harness the full power of this observatory, hence the classification of alerts into candidates of transients is one of the main objectives of FINK, using machine learning techniques. FINK also includes other traditional broker features such as catalogue and survey cross-matches.

Another optical time-domain survey, the Zwicky Transient Facility (ZTF)[4], which is already in operation, uses an alert system design similar to the one envisioned by the Rubin observatory, hence allowing to prototype and test relevant features and protocols prior to the start of Rubin observatory operations[1]. FINK is currently operating directly with the ZTF alert stream.
