On remarque ici la fusée déviatrice qui contraignait l'ensemble à adopter la trajectoire courbe devant l'éloigner de la fusée porteuse (à cause du risque d'explosion de celle-ci). Un autre dispositif (un plan nommé "canard") contraignait également l'ensemble à courber sa trajectoire.
Il faut en effet comprendre que l'ensemble Apollo en configuration abortive était stable, aérodynamiquement parlant, non pas parce qu'il était à traction avant (ce qui est une idée fausse très répandue), mais parce que son Centre aérodynamique d'efforts normaux était suffisamment en arrière de son Centre des Masses. La position très arrière du Centre aérodynamique d'efforts normaux est évidemment dû à la forme conique du vaisseau Apollo, laquelle produit une forte stabilisation.
