The soundtrack and musical score were composed by A. R. Rahman, while production design was handled by T. Muthuraj. P. C. Sreeram was the film's cinematographer and editing was done by Anthony. The climax train fight scene was shot in the railway stations of Chengalpattu, Rayagada, Brahmapur and Visakhapatnam. The film was dubbed and released in Telugu and Hindi languages, along with the original Tamil version.[10][11]
I was released on 14 January 2015, coinciding with Pongal, and received positive reviews from critics with praise for its direction, acting (especially Vikram, Suresh Gopi and Amy Jackson), cinematography, VFX, production design, action sequences and music, but criticized its runtime, pace and editing.[12] The film was a commercial success, grossing ₹227—240 crore worldwide, becoming one of the highest grossing Tamil films of all time and Vikram's highest-grossing film until Ponniyin Selvan: I.
