2012 saw Cane earn his debut for New Zealand internationally. Cane succeeded Kieran Read as the All Blacks' captain on May 5, 2020. He has represented King Country in the Heartland Championship, Bay of Plenty in the National Provincial Championship, and the Chiefs in Super Rugby.[1][2]
On 28 October 2023, Cane became the first player ever to receive a red card in a men's Rugby World Cup final after an illegal high challenge.[3]
