The local economy was once based on coal mining and other heavy industries; the area now largely functions as a commuter settlement.[2]
The core of the town was formed in the nineteenth century through the expansion and eventual merger of the mining villages of East Stanley and West Stanley.[3] The civil parish, created in 2007,[4] incorporates the town of Stanley and the villages of Annfield Plain, Tanfield, Craghead, Catchgate, Tantobie, Tanfield Lea, South Moor, White-le-Head, Bloemfontein, Clough Dene, Greencroft, Harelaw, Kip Hill, The Middles, New Kyo, No Place, Oxhill, Quaking Houses, Shield Row, and West Kyo.[5] The parish has seven wards: Annfield Plain, Catchgate, Craghead & South Stanley, Havannah, South Moor, Stanley Hall, and Tanfield.[6]
