Time Remembered
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Time Remembered is a modal jazz standard composed by jazz pianist Bill Evans.
Jack Reilly says that the work is both influenced by the sixteenth century modal works of the polyphonist masters (Palestrina, Byrd, Frescobaldi, etc.) and the oeuvre of the impressionist composers (Debussy and Ravel).[1]
It was recorded for the first time in 1962 for the album Loose Blues (released posthumously only in 1982) with a quintet featuring Zoot Sims and released for the first time in 1966 on Bill Evans Trio with Symphony Orchestra with an orchestration by Claus Ogerman. Evans recorded various live trio versions of the piece, notably in 1974 for the album Since We Met with Eddie Gómez and Marty Morell. The piece has been recorded by various other artists, including the Kronos Quartet (1985), Fred Hersch (1990), John McLaughlin (1993), and Chick Corea and Gary Burton (2012). In 1994, Paul Lewis added lyrics to the piece, although the wide intervals, ranging upward to a high C-sharp, make it challenging to sing. The vocal version was recorded by Kendra Shank in 2008.
