Louie Gohmert

Louis Buller Gohmert Jr. (/ˈɡoʊmərt/; born August 18, 1953[1]) is an American attorney and former judge. He was a member of the U.S. Representative from Texas's 1st congressional district from 2005 to 2023. Gohmert is a member of the Republican Party and was part of the Tea Party movement.

In January 2015, he unsuccessfully ran against John Boehner for the position of Speaker of the House of Representatives.[2]
During the COVID-19 pandemic, he became known for his criticism of wearing surgical masks to prevent the spread of COVID-19. In July 2020, Gohmert tested positive for the disease.[3]
In July 2020, Gohmert proposed to ban the Democratic Party over their past support for slavery during the Civil War era.[4]
In November 2021, Gohmert announced his plans to run for Texas Attorney General in the 2022 election.[5] He lost the Republican nomination in the first round of voting.
